What is the MSK system?

Musculo skeletal system is a system that consists  of bones , joints, overlying muscles, ligaments and tendons. They create a skeletal framework and provides structure to human body and enables multiple functions

  • Bones – are rigid structures made up of bone cells and minerals -calcium and phosphorus. Different bones join together in specific way to form joints , which provide the shape and structure to the species.
  • Cartilage – is present between two bones. It provides cushion to the joints and reduces friction.
  • Ligaments – are strong rope like structures that connect two bones and hold them in position. They provides strength and stability to the joints.
  • Muscles – overlie the bones and acts as a cushion between the bones and the skin. The strength of  skeletal system also depends on the strength and bulk of the muscle mass.
  • Tendons – Muscles are attached to the bones via tendons. They generate force and allow movement to occur smoothly.

The MSk works in coordination and input from nervous system. The strength and functioning of the skeletal system depend on the strength and stability of all the above  structures. Any injury or weakening of any of these structures will lead to chronic pains, restricted movements and impaired functions.
